THE 11th ARMOURED DIVISION

The British 11th Armoured Division were my first force in Flames of War and one I have played the most. I very much admire the way the Brits did things in WW 2, for example, when they needed a bigger gun to fight the heavier German panzers they took an anti tank gun that was too big for the Sherman and put it in anyway. They had to turn the gun 90 degrees and make a hole at the back of the turret so the gun could recoil. There are other similar examples, but the attitude to just make it work appeals to me.

The Black BullThe 11th Armoured Division was one of the best British armoured divisions in WW 2. It was involved in many key battles including Goodwood, Epsom, Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. The division was formed in 1941 under the command of Major General Hobart. General Hobart had led the first tank battalion ever raised and was an expert in armoured warfare. The black bull emblem of the division came from his own family crest.

British FirelfyThe British High Command created the 11th Armoured Division in response to the great success of the German panzer divisions during early stages of the war. The division contained enough supporting arms to be near self sufficient on the battlefield, but also be capable of rapid advances like the German panzer divisions. In December 1943, Major General Roberts was apponted as the divisions commanding officer. He started the war as a Captain and during the war had risen the ranks to be the youngest Major General in the army, like Hobart, he was an armoured warfare expert.
